University of Memphis- EEUU

This international two-week program, taught in English and Spanish, is an excellent opportunity for cross-cultural learning between different students. Classes are composed of students from Memphis (USA) and from different European universities, including the University of Alicante. The program consists of two modules, one offered and taught by Faculty from the University of Memphis and another by Faculty from the University of Alicante. Besides, there are some cultural trips and outdoor activities organized where all students can interact and improve their language skills.

El curso se compone de dos módulos, módulo A (Universidad de Memphis) y módulo B (Universidad de Alicante), , total del curso 40 horas y 4 créditos de la UA

Las lenguas de trabajo de las clases serán INGLÉS y ESPAÑOL impartidas por profesores de ambas universidades.

Clases de LUNES a VIERNES, cuatro horas diarias y una salida de campo de 4 horas una tarde a Orihuela para visitar la Casa Miguel Hernández.

MÓDULO A -- Universidad de Alicante, España
La enseñanza del inglés/español como lengua extranjera

OBJETIVOS: el objetivo principal de este curso práctico es que los alumnos aprendan diferentes técnicas para la enseñanza del inglés y del español como lengua extranjera. Los alumnos españoles e internacionales trabajarán en grupos mixtos con el fin de crear diferentes unidades pedagógicas relativas a aspectos de la lengua española.

CONTENIDO:

1. La enseñanza del inglés / español como lengua extranjera: escuelas , modelos y técnicas.

2. Los niveles competenciales y de conocimiento en la actualidad (ACTFL en EEUU, Niveles europeos)

3. Análisis de MÉTODOS (situacional, funcional, comunicativo, etc) en la enseñanza/aprendizaje de inglés / español como lengua extranjera

4. Análisis de MATERIALES en la enseñanza/aprendizaje EFL/ELE (gramaticales, pronunciación, vocabulario)

5. El uso de INTERNET como herramienta para la enseñanza/aprendizaje

6. Diseño y creación de diferentes tipos de ejercicios en grupos según niveles y objetivos

7. Puesta en práctica de unidades por cada grupo y análisis crítico de resultados

8. Diseño y evaluación de los conocimientos de lengua española por el alumnado

9. Aprender el uso de la literatura española contemporánea en la clase de EFL/ELE

10. Mostrar las diferentes técnicas de escritura creativa con el ejemplo de autores españoles (Miguel Hernández, García Lorca, etc)

EVALUACIÓN: La evaluación constará de dos partes: A) trabajo realizado en clase que incluye participación, análisis y comentarios, ejercicios individuales y en grupos durante todas las semanas de clase (60%); B) creación y defensa de una UNIDAD DIDÁCTICA en grupos de alumnos de distinta procedencia siguiendo las pautas dadas por el profesor al inicio del curso en la última semana de clase (40%).

MÓDULO B -- University of Memphis, EEUU

1. Creative Writing and Translation in English

   (Prof. John Bensko)

OBJECTIVES: This is a course designed to expose students to the techniques of creative writing workshops as a way to develop their creativity, their awareness of the principles of poetry, and their ability to use creative writing and creative writing workshops in the teaching of a second language.

CONTENT:

Week One: introduction to creative writing workshops, their methods and their benefits; discussion of poetry writing, some basic principles; discussion of models of contemporary poetry in English and Spanish; practice in poetry writing; practice in critiquing poetry.

Week Two: workshop discussion of student poems and discussion of examples of creative writing assignments that can be given to second language students; class trip to gather materials for creative writing and a discussion of tactics for gathering such material.
Conclusion of workshop discussion of student poems and over-view of workshop methods; final discussion of tactics of using creative writing for the teaching of a second language.

EVALUATION:

Students will be evaluated on the basis of their performance in workshop discussions of the work of other students and on the basis of the creative assignments they complete. There may be short quizzes on technical terms and on reading assignments. After the conclusion of the classes, each student will turn in a portfolio of edited creative work to the professor by email.

2. Teaching English (TEFL) from an American Perspective

OBJECTIVES: This course is designed to give participants the basic skills necessary for an introductory career in Teaching English as a Foreign or Second Language [EFL/ESL].

CONTENT: The course will cover brief introductions to essential topics including:

EVALUATION:

Assessment will consist of three parts:

1. In-class work: participation, individual exercises, and group work (50%);

2. Model unit: planning, creating, “teaching, and evaluation of a sample teaching unit either individually or in small groups with the permission of the instructor (40%).

3. Two-hour written final covering the major terms and ideas in ESL/EFL (10%)
