Academic recognition: Certificate of credits (4 free elective credits or 5 ECTS) or recognition of the course duration (40 hours) by the Educational Science Institute of the University of Alicante.

This two-week program, taught in English and Spanish, is an excellent opportunity for cross-cultural socialization between international students since classes are composed of students coming from the University of Memphis (USA) and students from different European universities, including the University of Alicante. Classes will be five days per week, from Monday to Friday, starting on June 14 and finishing on June 28. Classes will be scheduled from 9 to 11 a.m. and from 11:30 to 1:30 p.m. Guided Tour (included): Students are required to attend a cultural visit to Orihuela (visit to the hometown and museum of the Spanish poet Miguel Hernandez, a day in the afternoon). Students wishing to gain credit for the program must attend at least 80% of the program’s course hours and fulfil the requirements set by each professor. Attendance will be taken twice daily by means of attendance lists . Language requirements: Students need to be able to understand and communicate in English and Spanish. Team work will be assigned depending on the students’ level in both languages. * There will be no classes on 24th and 25th of June, campus closed, during the celebration of the Fiestas of Hogueras de San Juan (Alicante). Students will have the unique opportunity to live this cultural experience, the most important event in the city of Alicante. |
MODULE A - Universidad de Alicante (Spain)
Teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language (ELE)

The main objectives of this practical course are to give students the opportunity to learn different techniques to teach Spanish as a foreign language. Spanish and international students will work together in groups to create educational units related with the Spanish language.
- Teaching Spanish as a foreign language: teaching methods (functional, communicative etc.
- Assessing your students’ level and their knowledge of the Spanish language (International levels)
- Analysis of ELE teaching materials (grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary)
- Design and creation of different types of ELE exercises in groups according the level and objectives.
- The use of the Internet and the New Technologies in ELE: web resources, video and computer software, social networks, e-books, Blogs, etc.
- The ELE Profession today: job searching and opportunities in the sector.
Creative Writing and Translation in Spanish

The main goals of this course are to:
- Familiarize students with some important modern writers and poets from Spain and Latin America.
- Learn different techniques and styles adopted by Spanish –speaking writers and poets and how to use them in an ELE class.
- Debate in groups about literary translations and adaptations of Spanish poems and short stories
- Create original short story/poems in groups of international students in Spanish and present them in class.
The course will be divided into several units dedicated to different authors (Miguel Hernández, García Lorca, Borges, Cortázar etc)
MODULE B: University of Memphis (USA)
Creative Writing and Translation in English

This is a course designed to expose students to the techniques of creative writing workshops as a way to develop their creativity, their awareness of the principles of poetry, and their ability to use creative writing and creative writing workshops in the teaching of a second language.
- First part: introduction to creative writing workshops, their methods and their benefits; discussion of poetry writing, some basic principles; discussion of models of contemporary poetry in English and Spanish; practice in poetry writing; practice in critiquing poetry.
- Second part: workshop discussion of student poems and discussion of examples of creative writing assignments that can be given to second language students; class trip to gather materials for creative writing and a discussion of tactics for gathering such material.
- Third part: conclusion of workshop discussion of student poems and over-view of workshop methods; final discussion of tactics of using creative writing for the teaching of a second language.
Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL)
